Swimming Results
2004 District Tournament Results.
Teays Valley’s 200 yard medley relay started the day with a winning combination of Page Zollinger (Jr.), Stephanie Meyerin (Jr.), Allison Stir (So.), and Rachel Sherman (Sr.), anchoring with a blistering 29.17, a personal best, in the freestyle leg, to win their heat of the medley relay competition with a best time of 2:17.82, 1/2 second better than the qualifying time. Final standings put TV in 20th place, an excellent showing for a first year relay team against other schools who have been longtime district competitors. Teays Valley’s early success inspired the day’s individual swimmers. Senior Margaret Stallman took the role of underdog and outraced the competition to advance to the podium. Stallman, in the 100 yard Butterfly, faced a re-match with an MSL foe but turned the tables on New Albany’s swimmer by leading the race and finishing strong with a season best 1:06.85, a three second improvement over her seed time. Stallman earned a 6th place medal for her come-from-behind victories. Teays Valley’s Stir competed in the 200 Individual Medley taking 3 seconds off her qualifying time to finish 18th with a 2:40.92. Saturday’s competition started for Pickaway County with the competitive 500 yard Freestyle event, one that has seen increased interest from swimmers than in previous years as distance events become more popular. Stallman, appearing in her fourth year of district competition, paced a season best race of 6:17.69, nine seconds faster than her qualifying time, earning 20th place. Stir competed in the 100 yard Backstroke posting a time of 1:16.10 for 29th place. Teays Valley ended the meet with the final event of the competition, the 400 yard freestyle relay. With each swimmer of the relay racing 100 yards, every second counts, clean starts are of utmost importance, and emotions run high in this fight for team pride. Teays Valley added to its record book with teammates Kayleigh Byrne (Fr.), Sherman, Stir, and Stallman, posting a 1:03.56 as anchor, swimming 400 yards in a time of 4:30.83, eleven seconds faster than their qualifying time and moving up two places in the rankings to 19th. 2004 Sectional Tournament Results.
Teays Valley’s Girls Swim Team made school history at Upper Arlington High School on Valentine’s Day as two of the three relays and two individual swimmers qualified to the Division II Central District Championships. Senior Margaret Stallman, 2003 District medalist in the butterfly, makes her fourth trip to Districts in both of her individual events, the 100 yard butterfly and 500 yard freestyle. For the first time Stallman is joined by a teammate as Sophomore Allison Stir qualified in each of her individual events as well. Stir will compete in the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke. Stallman and Stir participated in both the 200 yard medley relay and the 400 yard freestyle relay, with each relay team garnering a coveted spot to the District meet. This is the first time in Teays Valley history that a relay team, let alone two relay teams, has qualified to the prestigious Central District Championships. Saturday’s Sectional competition began with the team relays. Junior Page Zollinger started off the 200 yard medley relay strong in the backstroke. Stir brought the team neck and neck with the competition in the breaststroke leg of the relay. Then Stallman, in the butterfly, and Senior Rachel Sherman, in the freestyle, brought the first relay of the day in to the wall first in their heat with a time of 2:18.32, good for 4th place and a District berth. Stallman continued her strong showings at Sectionals with a 2nd place finish in the butterfly, turning in a time of 1:09.16, and 6th place in the 500 yard freestyle with 6:26.47. Stir finished with 5th place in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:43.77 and turned in a 1:15.67 in the 100 yard backstroke, good for 7th place. At the end of the day, Sherman, Stir, Stallman, and Freshman Kayleigh Byrne continued Teays Valley’s winning ways by bringing the 400 yard freestyle relay in for 6th place in 4:41.35, again, good enough for a trip to the District meet. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, teammates Zollinger, Junior Stephanie Meyerin, Freshman Alex Jeanneret and Byrne turned in a time of 2:05.79, just .40 seconds from a qualifying berth. Meyerin, competing in her first high school sectional championships, brought home top ten finishes in each of her individual events, but was just out of district contention. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Meyerin finished 8th with a time of 1:28.10 and was 10th in the 200 yard individual medley with a 3:10.20. Later in the afternoon, Teays Valley’s boys team, competing in Division 1, was highlighted by Jared Pritchard’s 21st place in the 100 yard backstroke with 1:22.67. Complete individual results follow. Teays Valley will be well-represented at the Central District Division 2 Girls Swim Championships Friday and Saturday at Ohio State University’s Mike Peppe Natatorium. Competition begins at 11am both days. Stallman, Stir and relay teams will participate each day. Go to the Tournament page now. - Report by Kristen Stallman |
